Just. Wow.
Apple (AAPL) just reported its Q4 numbers. And, um, I think I just wet my pants.
"The company sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter, 15.4 million iPads, 5.2 million Mac computers, and 15.4 million iPods, it said."
Q4 revenues at Apple came in at a whopping $46.1 billion. In just one quarter! And this $46B in sales represents a 76% surge over Q4 2010's revenue figure.
I love Google. I love Amazon. There are many other companies out there growing at an extremely fast clip, offering the best products or services in their niche, and fulfilling a consumer or business need that is totally pervasive today. But whether or not you love the fanboi-ism that Apple has either deliberately or unintentionally created all across the country and the world today, there is one thing that these numbers simply do not permit denying at this point:
Apple is the single greatest company in America today.
There is just nobody even close.

Quite agree. I personally find myself immune from its cult-of-personality popularity that has people buying their products to be seen using them (their trademark white cases were a stroke of genius). But you can't deny the simple genius of the iPod, the iPad, and the dozen other products that have changed the world.
Funny thing is, I am the only person I know whose entire family has purchased precisely zero Apple products. We do not own any Mac computers, none of us has ever had a need for an iPod, and we all use phones other than iPhones. I actually do have an iPad at my home but that was bought for me as a gift by my brother. And I have exactly one app on it -- the Kindle.
Well, guess I can give them they aren't quite holier than thou Google who does no wrong.
They spent 100-mil this year with patent abuse of their competition. If you look at many of the idea they are as basic as breathing.
I am not saying they are unique in try to legislate away competition. But, no gold stars, please!
Amazon is probably the more user friendly. What they have actually done is turn their support department into an arm of their marketing department.
Gary doesn't see that everything Apple has ever done was not innovative and that dates back to Jobs visiting Xerox. What he does is set higher standards for product than competition. Excellence there is rewarded as it should be.
Seeking excellence for the three you mention is a common thread. No altruism involved; just decent business standards in a world that mostly lacks them.
Steve Jobs is a genius. Apple plays a big part of our life today form desktop, macbook and mobiles. I recently Buy Poker Software on my iPhone gezzz it cool, having play it on weekends.
I'm not suggesting that Apple has a 100% record of innovation, but they have an impressive record of a) taking technology and understanding how consumers would best use it, b) created virtually single-handedly the .mp3 business by convincing the record companies that by ignoring the digital market they stood to lose millions of dollars per month, c) created, at long last, a tablet that consumers bought by the bushelful, and many other innovations that have changed the world and made their shareholders billions. And sure, they grabbed the idea of a mouse and GUI from Xerox, but Xerox stole it from Bell Labs, so I'm prepared to give them a pass on that one.
Conversely, my father has probably bought at least a dozen Macs over the past twenty-five years, and has one of just about every current Apple product. He does his part to help Apple's balance sheet. At any large family dinner, you'll commonly see a few people pulling out an iPad or iPhone to show someone something.
